CLAY CITY -- The weekend proved to be a good one on the diamond for Clay City's baseball and softball teams, which both gained wins over visiting Turkey Run.
The baseball team got six strong innings from Kole Smith in his first start of the season and Ben Denker earned the save in a 4-1 victory over the Warriors.
Smith helped his cause at the plate with a double and a triple with an RBI and Colton Harbour drove in a run for the Eels. Zack Boggs drove in a pair of runs with a double and Blake Cesinger, Brylan Jones and Easton Booe each had base hits.
The softball team produced a 4-0 shutout win over Turkey Run, jumping on the visitors for two runs in the first inning. Emmie Kittle, Madison Booe and Rachael Cottrell had consecutive hits to start the game. Booe's hit was an RBI double and Cottrell drove in the second run with a base hit.
Senior Abby Reed returned to the lineup and had RBI hits in the third and fifth innings to complete the victory.
Cottrell was 3-for-3 at the plate, Reed was 2-for-2 and Kittle was 2-for-3 for the Eels.
Whitney Jeffers got the pitching win with seven shutout innings and seven strikeouts.
The baseball team has won five-of-six games and visits Vincennes Rivet tonight at 5 p.m. The softball team hosts North Central today at 4:30 p.m.
