Children in grades 3-12 who like to have fun, meet new people and learn new skills are encouraged to join 4-H, a volunteer-based, informal, educational program of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service.

It focuses on "learning by doing," and reaches boys and girls through small groups called clubs.

Through 4-H, children have the opportunity to participate in meetings, complete community service and attend special educational workshops.

They may also sign up to attend 4-H Camp and, participate in the local county fair.

Children will also get to select projects, which they will complete and learn more about, such as photography, rocketry and gardening.

It is easy to enroll in 4-H. Children can do it one of two ways. The first way is to go online at www.extension.purdue.edu/clay and click on 4-H Youth Development, then click on online enrollment.

Once there, follow the directions to enroll.

The other way is to obtain a paper enrollment form from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Office and fill it out.

There is a $15 program fee to sign up for 4-H (with a maximum of $45 per family with three or more children).

When signing up, children will need to select a 4-H club. They may join any club they wish, but it is suggested to sign up for one with friends or one which is located near the child's home.

There are a few special clubs for some projects.

The enrollment deadline for Clay County 4-H is May 1.
