Clay City softball and baseball fall on the road Thursday

SPENCER -- the Clay City Eels suffered a disappointing softball defeat on Thursday night, falling to Owen Valley on the road in a 6-5 decision.

The victory was the Patriots first of the season as Owen Valley scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Clay City reacted with five runs in the top of the sixth, but couldn't gain the equalizer.

The Eels (8-6 overall) travel to Shelbyville, Ky. for tournament play this afternoon at Martha Layne High School. Clay City opens at 11:30 a.m. against a 14-6 Bell County, Ky. squad.

In baseball action at Rockville, the host Rox scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning to claim a 4-3 victory over Clay City on Thursday.

The Eels' Kole Smith went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI's and Brylan Jones was 2-for-5 in the marathon contest. Denker was 1-for-4 with a walk and scored once, Seth Barrett had a single and Blake Cesinger scored a run.

Ben Denker got the start and went 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and giving up four hits. Jones came in to relieve him and struck out four in 2 1/3 innings and Kole Smith pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit.

Clay City (6-6 overall, 5-1 SWIAC) hosts Shakamak at 5 p.m. on Monday beginning at 5 p.m.
