Times Staff Report

The Northview Junior Varsity Cardinal baseball team pulled off an improbable comeback against rival Terre Haute South on Thursday evening, rebounding from a 9-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to snatch a 10-9 victory over the Braves.

An eight-run sixth inning was the catalyst behind the victory as Damon Bass and Paul Dickison led off the frame with consecutive singles and Blake Mershon drew a walk to load the bases. Hunter Slack singled to bring in a run and both JJ Nees and Preston Shuffield brought runs home when they were hit-by-pitch. South nearly got out of the jam with the lead intact, retiring Joe Ball and Kyle Moore on groundouts. However, the rally resumed quickly as four consecutive walks to Bass, Dickison, Braden Timberman and Mershon completed the comeback for the Knights.

The Braves jumped on top quickly with six runs in the first inning fueled by four walks, a hit batter and an error.

For the game, The Knights got two RBI's apiece from Timberman, Moore and Ball and one each from Slack, Nees, Shuffield and Mershon. Both Shuffield and Dickison had two hits in the win. Moore got the win in relief with two scoreless innings of work in which he didn't allow a hit and struck out five Braves hitters.

In the nightcap Junior Varsity Black contest for the Knights, walks played a big role in the final inning comeback as South registered a 9-7 win.

The Braves scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for the win.

Ball started the game on the mound for Northview and went five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned and struck out four. However, the Braves patiently drew five walks in the final two innings off Shuffield and came back for the win despite getting just one hit against the Knights' freshman.

At the plate, Nate Newton had a double and two RBI's for Northview, Ball stole two bases and had a hit and Hunter Slack had a base hit.

The JV Black squad (4-3 overall) hosts the Northview Invitational today starting with a 10 a.m. game against Plainfield. Martinsville and Terre Haute play the following game with the losing squads meeting at 3 p.m. The winning teams will follow at 5:30 p.m.
