Several Clay County residents stopped by the Clay County Courthouse at noon Thursday to take part in an annual National Day of Prayer event.

Carbon Baptist Church Pastor Barry Corder opened the event with a moment of prayer before the individuals broke into several small groups.

The groups spread out along the courthouse lawn. Each group was pitted with a local pastor and elected officials.

The small groups then took time to pray.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual event, which takes place during the first Thursday of May.

It was designated as an official annual day of observance in 1952.

The first National Day of Prayer took place July 20, 1775, after the Continental Congress issued a proclamation recommending a day of public "humiliation, fasting, and prayer."
