Vera Thornton Pierce, 92, Terre Haute, died at 9:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Madison, Ind., as the daughter of Alonzo B. and Mollie Smith Thornton. She married Ned F. Pierce, Brazil, on July 9, 1938, in Lexington, Ind., and they shared 62 wonderful years together. She and her family moved to Brazil in 1940, and lived there for 48 years. She worked for three years at Meridian Street School. She also volunteered at Clay County Hospital and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

While living in Brazil she attended and was a member of Community Missionary Church. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading, poetry, scrap booking and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six sisters, one brother and one son-in-law.

She is survived by two sons Robert F. Pierce and his wife, Nobuko, Sasebo, Japan, and Mike Pierce, Thornton, Colo., two daughters Deann Schiele, Terre Haute, and Maryellen Christeson and her husband John, Terre Haute, one granddaughter Catherine "Katie" Christeson, great granddaughter Mylee Christeson and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. --noon Monday, May 14, at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at noon Monday with burial to follow at Clearview Cemetery.
