TERRE HAUTE -- The Clay City baseball team got the opportunity to play on the turf field at Indiana State Tuesday evening and made it last a little longer than usual as the Eels won 7-6 in nine innings over Cloverdale.
Senior Ben Denker went 4-for-5 in the game with three stolen bases and scored four times to pace the offense. Blake Cesinger was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once and Kole Smith had the game-winning hit, scoring Denker from second in the ninth inning. Smith had two RBI in the win. Brylan Jones was the winning pitcher, throwing the final five innings in his best outing of the season.
Jones allowed just two hits, no runs and struck out six in relief of Denker, who started and allowed six runs on four hits and two walks in four innings. Jones also had a hit, Mason Persinger scored one and walked to go with a hit and Trevor Smith had a hit, stolen base and scored a run.
The Eels have won 10-of-12 games and play Friday at 5 p.m. for a share of the SWIAC title against Shakamak.
