The Western Indiana Conference Track and Field Meet had a familiar look when the final athlete crossed the finish line on Wednesday evening to conclude the two-day meet.

The Brown County girls held off a spirited rally by Edgewood in the second day's running events to edge the Mustangs 182 to 171 to repeat as WIC champions as Northview placed third ahead of West Vigo, Owen Valley, Sullivan and South Vermillion.

The boys' race went to Edgewood, which dominated the sprinting events to pull away for a 10th consecutive team championship with 193 points to top Northview's 103 for second-place. West Vigo was third with 91 points followed by Brown County, Owen Valley, Sullivan and South Vermillion.

The Mustang boys took a 30-point lead following Tuesday's field events and then extended that lead quickly, literally, by winning the 100 meters (John Selbe), 110 hurdles (Damian Chambers), 200 meters (Selbe), 4x100 relay, 300 hurdles (Chambers) and 4x400 relay in a conference record time of 3:29.61 to break the two-year old mark. Those victories built on field event wins in the high jump and pole vault Tuesday evening.

The Knights got some strong running efforts as well with the 4x800 relay team winning the event by 30 seconds to miss the school record by barely a second. The team of Devon Cooksey, Damon Hyatt, Ian Heffner and Nic Yocom finished in 8:13.33.

Yocom also raced to a runner-up finish in both the 1,600 and 800 meters as West Vigo's Andrew Kump won the 1,600 by seven seconds with a time of 4:32.04. Nathan Kump won the 800 meters by 3/10ths of a second over Yocom in 2:01.15.

Heffner was fourth in the 200 meters and the 4x100 relay team was the runner-up with Hyatt placing fourth in the 800 meters.

On day one, Ethan Stewart claimed the shot put with a heave of 45-9 to edge teammate Jesse Miller (43-10) and Andrew Davis was sixth in the discus. Patrick Durcholz was third in the high jump.

In the girls' meet, Edgewood's Olivia Ashba did everything she could to single handedly bring the Mustangs back to win the meet after the Eagles took a 23-point lead after the field events.

Ashba won the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for a perfect 40-point meet by herself. However, the Eagles had five victories in running events themselves led by the distance runners.

Freshman Rose Guringrich was the winner in both the 3,200 and 1,600 meters with teammate Annette Wininger placing second in the 1,600 to boost the Eagles team total. Madison Morris won the 400 meters for Brown County and the Eagles wrapped up the meet by nearly breaking the conference record in the 4x400 relay, missing it by 17-hundredths of a second in 4:13.17.

The Knights got field event wins from Leeanna Knight (long jump -- 16-6 ) on Tuesday along with Alexus Bex in the discus (100-0 ) to help set the tone for Wednesday. Brooke Deighton placed third in the high jump, Morgan Holt was third in the pole vault and Bex was also second in the shot put.

On day two, Knight came back to finish second to Ashba in the 100 meters and Gracie Geswein was fourth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Emily Conrad placed sixth in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200.

Both teams will begin the postseason in the sectional next week.

Girls' team results: Brown County 182, Edgewood 171, Northview 92.5, West Vigo 67, Owen Valley 40, Sullivan 38.5, South Vermillion
