Head Start sets up signup date

Friday, May 11, 2012

Clay County Head Start will conduct an enrollment opportunity for children ages 0-5, at the Brazil Resource Center, 800 W. Jackson St., Brazil, June 14, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

There are four types of Head Start programs offered -- at centers and in homes -- depending on the age and needs of families and their children.

In the half-day center-based programs, classes meet four half-days per week for three-and-a-half hours each day. There are three half-day center base programs in Brazil.

The full-day full-year program is in session from 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The program services children ages 3-5 and is located in Brazil. There is a $45 charge per week for the program and CASY assistance is accepted.

There are two home-based programs. One is for children ages 3-5 and the Early Head Start program is for prenatal mothers and children from birth to 3-years-old. In both programs, the home visitor will make weekly home visits to homes and arrange two socialization opportunities each month.

Parents interested in attending the enrollment session should bring proof of income with them, in addition to their 2011 W-2 or a recent paycheck stub. If a family receives T.A.N.F., parents should bring their award letter with them as well.

Head Start is a federally funded, income-based program that recognizes parents as the child's most important teachers. Education, health services, social services and parent involvement are the major components of Head Start programming.

A Healthy Families program, which provides support services for prenatal mothers, is also offered.
