For the first time in several years, the Northview High School Marching Knights will take part in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade.
The parade is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 26, beginning at noon. It will televised locally on WISH-TV (based in Indianapolis) and nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
Northview band director Bob Medworth said the program has marched in the parade, but it has been several years.
"I think we've been in it twice," Medworth told The Brazil Times.
Medworth said the Marching Knights took part in the parade years ago. In addition, the Brazil High School Marching Band also took part in the event.
Medworth said the Marching Knights were invited to participate this year, along with a handful of other high school marching bands.
"It's a great parade," Medworth said. "I think the kids are really excited about doing it. It's a big thing for Indianapolis. The parade helps with the economy and we're on national TV. I think it's a good thing to do."
Other Indiana high school marching bands participating in the parade include Orleans, Lewis Cass, Lapel, Jay County, Concordia, Center Grove and Ben Davis. In addition, the Purdue University All-American Marching Band will also take part.
Medworth said students in the marching program learned the Knights would take part in the parade approximately one year ago.
Recently, the Marching Knights have been gearing up for the event, practicing their performance. Medworth said the Knights will perform Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" during the parade.
He said he met with students about one month ago to look over possible songs to perform.
"We had to find one that is a walking tempo," Medworth said. "That song is the right tempo. It was an easy choice."
He said the band will leave Saturday, May 26, at 8 a.m., in preparation for the parade.
"I think they'll be excited," Medworth said. "As soon as they get to the lineup and see all the people and activity, they'll be excited. I think everybody will have fun."
Other national parades the Marching Knights have taken part in include the annual Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade, The Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade, and the Orange Bowl Parade.
Medworth added several members of the Northview Band Boosters will work a couple of food booths during the Indianapolis 500 race, scheduled for Sunday, May 27.
