GREENCASTLE -- Usually with experience yields positive results, but that was not the case for Northview's Leeanna Knight in Tuesday's track and field sectional. The sophomore finished first in both long jump and 100-meter dash Tuesday evening. Knight also won the 100-meter dash in 2011.

"She's gonna get a lot better, that's for sure," Northview head coach Cole Schroer said. "She got hurt at sectionals (last year), so she wasn't able to compete at regional. Her work ethic is insane. She'll do everything you tell her to do to a "T", and everything she does, she does her best. That obviously shows when she runs 100 meter dash at sectionals."

Northview finished fourth as a team with a score of 50, behind Terre Haute South (95), Greencastle (98) and now the 11-time consecutive sectional winner, Terre Haute North, which beat its competition by almost double, with a score of 184.

Knight wasn't the only young Northview athlete to finish high on Tuesday.

Freshman Gracie Geswein finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, qualifying her to move on to regional. Geswein was also part of the team that finished second in the 4x100 meter relay. Knight, sophomores Natasha Barrett and Halie Sciotto and juniors Andrea Schultz Carrie Duregger were also part of the relay team.

"Gracie's the same way [as Leeanna]," Schroer said. "She works hard, she'll do everything you ask her to do. She's just young, she's got a lot of learning to do, I think. She's just like Leanna, she's gonna get a lot better. I can see her being a lot better than she is now. As a freshman going out in the 100 hurdles and the 4x100, I'm proud of that, and she should be proud of that and I'm sure she is."

Clay City finished eleventh overall in sectional action with 14 points, beating its score from last year by 12.

Coach Elissa Downey was happy with the improvement.

"I'm really pleased with them," Downey said. "I look forward to us improving more next year."

Senior Asie Jeffers finished fifth in discus, beating her previous best. Junior Kelsey Wright, a new student, also finished fifth, but in the 1600.

Regionals will be at West Lafayette on Tuesday.
