Anytime a girls' tennis team can get a win, it's a good thing. But if that team can get a win during sectional season, as the Northview tennis squad did Thursday evening, it's even better.
Junior Haley Leach, Northview's No. 1 singles player, was the only player to lose on the home side. South Putnam's Erica Minor, a senior, beat her 6-2, 6-1.
"[Haley] was up 4-1 in the first set, and I think it's just all mental," Northview coach Emily Goff said. "She's a good player and a hard worker."
Fellow junior Nicole Linton, the No. 2 singles player, beat the Eagles' Jade Asher 6-1, 6-2.
On the No. 3 court, Northview senior Kelsey Oehler needed a third set, but secured the win against South Putnam's Kelly Hayden, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
Both doubles teams for the Knights won Thursday evening. The No. 1 team of seniors Jenna Smith and Trisha Cox beat South Putnam 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Shelby Timberman and freshman Kaysia Reberger beat the Eagles 6-2, 6-3.
"Both of [the doubles teams] played really well and smart tonight. They hit the ball well," Goff said. "Our No. 1 doubles team is a really strong team, and work well together. Both of them being seniors, they really gave it their all tonight."
Northview plays for the sectional championship this evening against Greencastle, a 3-2 winner over South Vermillion, beginning at 5 p.m.
