Edward E. Smith, 45, Monrovia, Ind., is now being charged with criminal trespass (a class A felony), criminal mischief (a class D felony) and violation of the sex offender registry (a class D felony), along with his original charge of theft (a class D felony), which is now being charged as three counts, one for each air conditioning unit.
"Right now, we're still investigating to see if he was involved in any other thefts that happened during that time period," Sheriff Mike Heaton said.
Heaton told The Brazil Times there were some thefts in the City of Brazil around the same time, but so far detectives hadn't connected Smith to them.
The Clay County Sheriff's Department recently arrested Smith after looking into a lead from a concerned citizen about the theft of three air conditioning units at the Clay County Humane Society.
After interviewing Smith, who is also a former employee of the humane shelter, about his involvement in the theft, detectives arrested him for the theft of the units, and he was booked in the Clay County Justice Center with a $7,000 bond with no 10 percent allowed.
Currently, Smith is incarcerated at the Clay County Justice Center with a $15,000 bond with no 10 percent.
