COVINGTON -- During the first Saturday of June annually, the Covington 5K raises funds for the maintenance and completion of the Covington Circle Trail.
The non-profit group The Friends of the Circle Trail, which hosts the June 2 race, is encouraging the community to participate for a good cause and is hoping to attract a wide variety of participants.
"This is not just for runners. We'd really like to encourage walkers to join us as well," organizer Beth Mason said.
"A lot of people tell us, 'I'm not racing. I'm only doing it for fun,' and we have just as many walkers as we have runners. We welcome parents with strollers and walkers of all ages," she said.
The race begins at 8 a.m., and shuttles will transport runners from the Covington City Park to the starting line at the Pearl Street trailhead.
Shuttles will be available between 7:15 a.m., and 7:45, and participants should allow enough time to sign in at the park.
"The elevation fall from the starting line to the City Park would suggest that this course is gentle on the legs, and it is, with three nice downhill slopes in the second half," Covington resident and runner Jeff Dennis said.
"The finish in the park is fun, wide open and reminds me of the old track that I ran on back when I was in high school," he continued.
This year, the Covington Food Pantry will receive half of the proceeds raised from the event.
Registration forms for the race may be picked up at the Covington IGA, Covington High School and all Fountain Trust Co. locations.
Online registration is available through May 29.
The pre-registration fee is $18, which includes a T-shirt.
Runners can register until the day of the race.
After May 29, the fee will be $20 and the T-shirt will not be guaranteed.
Race day registration fee must be paid in cash and ends at 7:30 a.m.
Race packets may be picked up Thursday, May 31, at the Covington IGA, from 4-7 p.m.
Race packets may also be picked up on race day at the registration table in the park.
