CLAY CITY -- The Clay City baseball team wrapped up the regular season by pounding out a 13-5 victory over visiting South Putnam on Tuesday evening.
The Eels honored seniors Ben Denker, Kole Smith, Brylan Jones and Zack Boggs and then presented them a victory over the Eagles.
The game was scoreless until the third frame when Clay City drilled South Putnam pitchers Cody Heller and Wyatt Nees for a 12-run inning to put the game away.
Jones was the winning pitcher as he struck out 11 Eagle batters while giving up four hits.
The senior group was key in gaining the win that propelled the Eels to a 12-8 regular season record.
Boggs was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored with Denker smacking a double with two RBI, a walk and scored once. Smith was on base three times with a hit and two walks; he scored twice and drove in three runs for the Eels. Jones had a hit, scored twice and was hit-by-pitch.
Blake Cesinger drew a pair of walks, scored twice and had a hit in the win. Colten Harbour had a team-high three hits with three RBI, a stolen base and scored once. Seth Barrett had a hit, two RBI, walked once and scored. Easton Booe drew a walk and scored a run and Mason Persinger scored two times, drove in a run, stole a base and walked once.
Clay City opens sectional play on Monday with an 11 a.m. match-up against the host school, the Class A No. 3 Shakamak Lakers.
