Main Street looks for volunteers

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Calling all community members: The Brazil Main Street, Inc., is asking the community to help clean up downtown Brazil during "Beautification Day" Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.

Brazil Main Street President Lee Lewis said she is hoping to have people put together "Clean Teams," including church groups, businesses or individuals.

"It's like a kickoff for Main Street to get something accomplished," Lewis said.

Teams can meet at Brazil City Hall, where a work-detail group will send them to certain areas with jobs to complete such as picking up trash, pulling weeds or sweeping sidewalks. The groups are asked to bring their own equipment such as brooms or gloves.

T-shirts will be available at the event. The t-shirts read, "Got trash? Not anymore. Brazil, Indiana."

Prizes will be given out to the largest clean team, the person with the craziest uniform and the best clean team spirit.

Lewis said the organization also plans to set up trash barrels along National Avenue (United States 40) in downtown Brazil. Brazil Main Street has purchased 10 barrels.

Those wishing to sponsor a barrel may do so at a price of $150. Sponsored barrels will have decals indicating the specific sponsor.

"It can be a business or in memory of someone," Lewis said. "There are so many options."

Sponsorships for flowerpots are also available, with a cost of $50. Brazil Main Street has a total of 46 flowerpots at its disposal. Lewis said the organization is looking into purchasing a water system in order to water the flowers regularly.

Checks can be made to Main Street of Brazil and are tax-deductible. To sponsor a trash barrel or flowerpot, contact Lewis at 812-870-0949.

The organization is also planning a community event for June 30. A free downtown movie with free popcorn and Coca-Cola will begin at sunset. Lewis said the movie is a surprise, but will be family friendly. She encouraged the community to bring a blanket or lawn chair to the event.

"It's not a fundraiser," Lewis said. "Its purpose is to create community."

Is downtown trash a big problem? The real eyesore is all the empty buildings. Windows broken and boarded up, peeling paint, etc..
