Tearing Down

Monday, June 4, 2012

(Photo)
Demolition of the old water tower tank on Vandalia Street began Monday afternoon with Iseler Demolition, Port Hope, Mich., conducting the tear down. According to Iseler's crew, the workers are using torches to cut off pieces of the water tower before lifting them down and cutting them into smaller pieces to be hauled away. Crewmembers also said the work will be done on Tuesday. [Order this photo]

Stopped by and watched this for about a half hour today and theses guys are very fast. Only thing I was shocked to see is not a single one of them was using any type of safety devices being that high off the ground. One of them was even bent over the inside edge of the walk ramp at the top cutting under his feet without any cable keeping him from falling to his death. Sure hope they get done without a injury or OSHA will be having a HEYDAY with this crew.

You make a common mistake. Many times, people make the comment that our workers aren't tied off. The reason is that they are hundreds of feet away and are looking for a rope. We don't use ropes (they'll burn), we use 3/16" cable lanyards. The person you are talking about would have been tied off, at their feet, to a hole which was torched into the catwalk, or if they were close to the top of the leg, they'll attach to it. When we dismantle "elevatd steel", the crane in the air & our sparks falling to the ground is a "beacon on the horizon" for people in cars to see. OSHA watches us all of the time.

I live right across from the tower on the alley and u could not ask for a better bunch of hard workers. These men where all very friendly and polite. They worked all day Monday without breaks or even stopping for lunch. As a neighbor to the tower for 57 yrs,to have it tore down was a blessing. And the crew made it even better. What a great bunch of guys for a great job done.
