Upcoming goat, sheep workshops

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE -- Two Purdue Extension workshops will teach goat and sheep producers more about controlling internal parasites in their herds.

The first Sheep and Goat Parasite/FAMACHA Workshop will be 4-7 p.m., June 20, at the Purdue Animal Sciences Research and Education Center Sheep Unit, 5675 W. 600 N., West Lafayette.

The second workshop will be 4-7 p.m., June 28, at the Southern Indiana Purdue Agriculture Center, 11371 E. Purdue Farm Rd., Dubois.

"Internal parasitism is the No. 1 health concern for meat goat and sheep producers," Purdue Extension Small-Ruminant Specialist and workshop organizer Mike Neary said.

"Parasite resistance to dewormers is becoming more common on farms with sheep and goats. The FAMACHA system is for small-ruminant producers to use to help control internal parasites and to avoid resistance problems."

The workshop will cover a series of topics, including:

* Developing a whole-herd parasite control program,

* Management practices to reduce parasitism,

* Proper methods of deworming, and

* FAMACHA training and certification.

Registration is $25 per person, and $20 per each additional family member.

Payment is due by June 13 for the West Lafayette workshop and June 20 for the Dubois workshop.

More information and registration forms are available at http://www.ansc.purdue.edu/SH/ under "Upcoming Events."
