Democrats conduct caucus, fill positions

Thursday, June 7, 2012

The Clay County Democrats met in caucus Tuesday evening at the Clay County Courthouse to fill a handful of positions.

According to Clay County Democrat Party Chair Joe Broyles, two of the positions were filled.

On Wednesday, Broyles told The Brazil Times the party filled its central committee treasurer position. In addition, the party also selected a person to run in the November election for Clay County Surveyor.

Broyles said Donna Roscoe was selected to serve as the Central Democrat Committee Treasurer.

He added Frank Beasley would run for Clay County Surveyor in the fall.

"I think we're in a good position," Broyles said. "We're happy (with our selections). It went well."

The party announced its intentions to conduct a caucus in late May.

All those interested in filing for the open positions had 72 hours to contact Broyles to express their interest.

Broyles said Roscoe and Beasley were the only two to do so.

Broyles added no one expressed interest in running for Clay County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

The official deadline for parties to conduct a caucus is Saturday, June 30.

Broyles said the caucus was initially called because the party's treasurer, Wayne Lucas, had officially resigned May 15.

Broyles said it has been a long time since the Democrat Party has had to conduct a caucus in order to fill an election ticket.

Clay County Republican Party Chair Jodi Lohrman recently informed The Times the party has no intentions of conducting a caucus to fill its open position for Clay County Recorder.

Currently, Democrat Joe Dierdorf will run unopposed in the November election.
