Man dies following accident

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

A Brazil man died following an accident north of Interstate-70 Tuesday morning.

Officials were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:20 a.m.

According to Clay County Sheriff's Department Dep. Homer Knopp, Donald Hardesty, 52, Brazil, was heading north on State Road 59 driving a tanker full of molasses.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the road to the right and into a gulley off Little Birch Creek.

Officials speculated Hardesty might have died before the accident. In fact, it was believed a medical condition Hardesty had might have led to the accident.

"This wasn't a fatally related accident," Knopp said.

Knopp said he attempted to revive Hardesty, as did officials with TransCare. However, Clay County Coroner Joel Reinoehl pronounced him dead at the scene.

None of the molasses in the tanker spilled. However, the company Hardesty drove for -- Opies Transport -- brought another tanker to the area to drain the molasses from one tanker to another.

No official cause of death has been released, and an autopsy was scheduled for later Tuesday afternoon.

Other agencies responding to the accident included the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department and Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department.
