Edna Mae Phelps unexpectedly passed away at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, July 2, 2012, from complications caused by a lengthy battle with diabetes.

She was born March 1, 1939, and due to the death of her biological mother at birth, she was adopted by the late Herbert and Retha Hayes, Diamond, Ind.

She was married to Jim Phelps of Brazil, May 18, 1957.

She was a custodian for the Clay Community Schools for 23 years.

She was a member of The Way of the Cross First Assembly of God Church in Brazil.

She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Retha Hayes, and brothers John Hayes, Jim Hayes and Virgil Hayes.

She is survived by children William H. Phelps, Brazil, Charles H. Phelps, New Pekin, Lee Ann Carithers, Fontanet, and Keith A. Phelps, Clinton. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins.

Visitation will take place at French Funeral Home, Brazil, Thursday, from 4-8 p.m.

Funeral services will take place Friday, at 10 a.m., at French Funeral Home, with Pastor Jimmy Dowers officiating.

Graveside services will take place at Bridgeton Cemetery immediately following the service.
