For many individuals in Indiana, county fair time is one of the highlights of their summer.
For me, I always thought it was neat to see what projects youth had spent all year raising and crating in order to exhibit at the fair.
Not to mention how great it is to see what unique creative ideas residents enter in open class exhibits.
I guess you can officially call me a jinx. Every year since I was hired, the Clay County and Owen County fairs have been the same week and this year is no exception.
Therefore, Peggy Davis (Extension Educator, HHS), Donna Black (FNP Assistant) and I will be hopping from county to county in an effort to help make your county fair experience a great one.
Our efforts will be added to those put forth by Tammy Steiner (Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development in Clay County), Dave Schenck (Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development and CED in Owen County), County Extension Staff, 4-H Council Members, Fair Board members, 4-H members, volunteers and numerous other individuals who hope that your experience at this year's fair will be the best ever.
The Clay County Fair runs from July 14-20. Some of the pre-fair events that you don't want to miss out on are the Dog Show July 8, at 6 p.m., and the Cat Show July 10, at 6 p.m.
Then, on July 14, all 4-H livestock are due at the fair and there will be a Pet Animal Show at noon.
Starting the evening of Monday, July 16, and going through the evening of Wednesday, July 18, there will be Extension Staff and Purdue Master Gardeners in the north end of the AMAX building who can answer questions about agriculture, canning and horticulture.
They can also tell you about some of the exciting things going on with Purdue Extension and allow you the chance to participate in the "Discovering the Farm" activity we will have at the fair.
If you're interested n the Farm Bureau Flower Show, then stop by the fair July 17, at 1 p.m., and see all of the wonderful flowers on display.
And lastly, the Homemaker Afternoon at the Fair is July 19, at 1 p.m.
The Owen County Fair runs July 15-21.
One of the pre-fair events you might want to take part in includes the 4-H Bike Rodeo July 11, at 6 p.m.
The 4-H Exhibit Hall will open July 15 so you can see all of the neat projects 4-H'ers have successfully completed this year.
Also July 15 is the 4-H Rabbit Royalty at noon. The Health Fair will take place July 17 in the Open Class Building.
Purdue Master Gardeners will be on hand during the Health Fair to answer gardening questions and provide you with some gardening knowledge.
The Public Speaking and Demonstration Contest will take place at 1 p.m., in the Exhibit Hall July 18.
Finally, at 6 p.m., July 20, the 4-H Livestock Auction will take place.
Fair time is an exciting time that can be enjoyed by all who take part in the activities.
Please realize there are a lot of activities going on at both fairs, making it impossible to name every last event occurring during those days in this column.
If you happen to see me at either of the two fairs, please don't hesitate to say hello, as I am always excited to meet residents from the two counties and find out how Purdue Extension can help you.
As always, if you have any questions or would like information on any agriculture, horticulture or natural resource topic, then please contact your local Purdue Extension Office at 448-9041 in Clay County or 812-829-5020 in Owen County, or reach me directly at email@example.com.
