Born Jan. 3, 1929, in Brazil, he was the son of Fred F. and Jean (MacDonald) Sawyer, and was a graduate of Brazil High School class of 1947.
He married Dorothy Jean Endicott Aug. 27, 1955, and she survives.
He was a United States Army Veteran, having served as a Staff Sergeant from 1950-52, in the Korean War. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.
In 1963, he purchased Kromme Plumbing and Heating and worked there until his retirement.
Gene loved to trap shoot and his beloved dog, Buffy.
Survivors include his wife, children Anthony Sawyer (Louise), Seabrook, Texas, Andrew Sawyer (Lynn), Franklin, Tenn., Terrence Sawyer, Indianapolis, and Courtney Dickey (Andy), Greencastle, sister Joanne Bennett, grandchildren Ryan and Colby Sawyer, Hailey, Andrew and Graham Sawyer, Hannah Emily and Meghan Dickey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Lydia Claire Dickey.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home.
Private funeral services will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Putnam County or the Juvenile Diabetes Society.
