Riley 9U squad picks up USSSA World Series title

The Riley 9U travel baseball team captured the United States Specialty Sports Association World Series title over the July 11 weekend in Columbus, Ind. by going 6-1 in the tourney and defeating the Indiana Nitro, 6-5, in the championship game.

In the championship, Riley fell behind 4-0 in the opening two frames before cutting the deficit in half with two runs in the third inning. Riley tied the score in the bottom of the sixth to send the game into extra innings where each squad tallied a run in the seventh before Riley pushed the winning run across in the 10th inning.

The squad features four Clay County players as part of the roster and qualified for the tournament through its finish in a pair of qualifying tourneys.

The Riley squad opened play in the USSSA World Series with a 10-6 win over the Indiana Trojans and a 13-0 blanking of the Saginaw Bay Riverdawgs. The team lost its lone game of the World Series at the hands of the Indiana Bulls White team, 10-9, but rebounded to sweep its remaining four games. Riley downed the St. Joseph Bandits by a 12-0 score before winning its final three contests by 6-5 scores against the Indiana Trojans, Illinois Valley Titans and the Indiana Nitro in the title game.
