United Way hosting school drive

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

United Way of the Wabash Valley, in partnership with the Vigo County School Corporation, Clay Community Schools, Southwest School Corporation and Kid Kare Project, a United Way community partner, is inviting the community to help local families as the school year approaches. They are hosting their fourth annual community-based school supply drive called "Stuff the Bus."

"Stuff the Bus" challenges residents of the six counties the United Way of the Wabash Valley serves to bring as many new classroom necessities as possible for local students. All supplies collected from the event will be given to the participating school corporations or agency to distribute to students in need.

"School supplies are getting more and more expensive," said Danny Tanoos, Vigo Co. School Superintendent, said. "With the help of the United Way we are making sure the supplies are getting to the people who need the most, as schools can use the supplies on an as-needed basis. The 'Stuff the Bus' project is a great way to ensure that our students are equipped with the supplies they need to do their very important school work."

Stuff the Bus helps provide children in need with a fresh start to the upcoming school year through the donation of much needed new school supplies. Each school within the four participating corporations and agencies will receive the supplies.

"The 'Stuff the Bus' campaign is a great opportunity to show that everyone can make a difference to help advance the common good in the area of education," said Troy Fears, Executive Director of United Way of the Wabash Valley. "School officials tell us that children routinely show up to school without the basic tools they need to do their school work. United Way is committed to ensuring that all of our children have access to the basic foundation they need to succeed in school, setting them up for lifelong success."

A real school bus will be outside these donation locations on the following dates:

* Aug. 3 -- Clinton Wal-Mart from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,

* Aug. 6 -- Terre Haute Wal-Mart on South U.S. 41 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,

* Aug. 7 -- Brazil Wal-Mart from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,

* Aug. 8 -- Staples on South U.S. 41 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,

* Aug. 9 -- Terre Haute Wal-Mart on State Road 46 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and

The school corporations are looking for a variety of items including backpacks, composition paper, construction paper, pencil cases, erasers, rulers, toothpaste, band-aids, pencils and pens, crayons and colored pencils, glue and glue sticks, scissors, binders, book covers, toothbrushes and art pads.

All supplies collected will be given to the Vigo County School Corporation, Clay Community Schools, Southwest School Corporation and Kid Kare Project who will organize and distribute them to students in need.
