Construction on the new Central Office for Clay Community Schools is still underway.

The office is located in the former American Legion No. 2 building at 1015 Forest Ave., in Brazil and is being renovated by Hannig Construction of Terre Haute.

Kim Tucker, superintendent of Clay Community Schools, said that she hopes the building will be completed in time for the Aug. 9 school board meeting.

"We sincerely hope to have everything done by then," Tucker said. "I'd love to have our next school board meeting in that building."

Clay Community Schools purchased the building in August 2011, and bids for construction took place in March 2012.

The building is 8,280-square feet and sits on 1.34 acres.

There are approximately 100 parking spaces in the parking lot.

Tucker was hoping to have board members occupy the building by July, but construction is not yet finished.

"This week we're working on painting and tiling," Tucker said. "Next week I hope to be at the stage of doing carpeting."

Tucker said by the end of next week she would make a decision as to whether or not the next school board meeting will take place at that building.

In August of 2007, the community was told that the cost to the taxpayers for replacing the old Central Office would be 2.2 million dollars (Reference: Facility Study for Clay Community Schools by Schmidt Associates dated 8/23/2007).

Buying the American Legion building for $277,500 and, even though the $419,900 final bid for renovation went over the initial architect's estimate of $300,000, it looks like the school corporation got a fairly new building that isn't going to cost $100,000 a year (Reference: Capitol Projects Fund Budget) in upkeep IF NO MAJOR SYSTEM FAILED and costed even more! I say that at a total cost of about $700,000, the taxpayers were saved from paying $1.5 million dollars for a building that was sorely needed!

Gotta have all the best new stuff while our kids futures go down the toilet. I am very happy my son got a good education in California, your dumb-ed down policy in the Indiana education system is SAD and very obvious when you see the differences between the two. You get what you pay for I guess.

The data compiled by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for the Department of Education appears to indicate that Indiana is doing better job of educating than California as Indiana students surpass California students by about 10% in every discipline at every grade level listed. While education can always be improved, it is working in Indiana.

Our expenditure per student is less than California's, too, so I reckon WE are getting what we pay for. Too bad California isn't. Perhaps they should take a math course in Indiana so they can figure out how to get what they are paying for but not getting.

The UC system works for the states children, instead of working against them like they do here in Indiana. Leo is a obvious liar who would say anything to make this lame school system look good when it's not, and that's the problem. We need good leadership, but they just want more of the same at the school board and everywhere in this county for that matter. Fox News is also the problem Stop drinking your racist Kool aid.......

I would have to say what Leo is providing are hard facts. He references everything he post. I wouldn't say he is a liar.
