TERRE HAUTE -- Wayne Newton Post 346 has had its share of nights where the bats simply weren't supplying a wealth of offense this season.
Post 346 pounded out three home runs on a gusty evening at Terre Haute North High School on the way to a 27-4 rout of Seymour in the opening game of Indiana Regional No. 3. The victory moves Post 346 into the winners bracket today for a noon contest against Friday's winner between Floyds Knob and St. Leons.
The runs came early and often Friday night for Post 346 as a pair of first inning home runs sparked the host squad to a 6-0 lead out of the gates. Wayne Newton pitcher Jimmy Maxwell was the lucky beneficiary as he kept Seymour off the board until Post 346 had put the game away.
Maxwell had some of his own troubles early as Seymour left the bases loaded in the first inning and left two more on in the second frame. Post 346 was able to turn a nifty double play to keep Seymour from plating its first run in the inning.
Sam Wolf had a game that hitters dream of as he drove in 11 runs in the game for Post 346, including a grand slam during a lengthy, 13-run third inning that ended Seymour's thoughts of victory.
In the third inning, Scott West's RBI base hit preceded Wolf's blast and Preston Tofaute added another RBI single for Post 346. Wayne Newton re-loaded the bases and then was patient enough to get RBI walks from Kodie Girton, West, Dalton Sexton and Tony Rosselli in consecutive at-bats. Wolf added a two-run base hit for a personal six RBI inning as the lead grew to 21-0 after three innings.
Manager John Hayes substituted liberally over the final few innings as Connor Pierce drilled an RBI double in the fourth and both TJ Decker and Pete Lanoo followed by driving in runs with singles.
Seymour finally got on the board with a three-run, fifth inning and added a single run in the sixth before the game ended via the 10-run rule after seven innings of play.
Post 346 improved to 30-10 overall this season and continues play at noon with the championship game slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
