TERRE HAUTE -- For the first 6 1/2 innings, Wayne Newton Post 346 looked like it had no control over the game against St. Leon Post 464 at Terre Haute North High School's baseball field before coming alive in the last two innings and securing a 7-6 victory.
In fact, the home team didn't even get its first hit until the fourth inning when Cody Thornton hit a triple with two outs. However, Thornton's hit didn't result to anything as the next player flew out.
Thornton's hit did help Post 346 in one way, though. It seemed as if it jump-started the offense of his team.
Post 346 scored a run in the fifth and the sixth innings, leading to a four-hit, five-run eighth inning, and giving it a 7-5 lead going into the (potentially) final half-inning.
In the eighth, Tony Roselli and Sam Wolf hit doubles to open the inning, leading to a Roselli score. Thornton walked, then stole second. Zach Milam brought Wolf home with a RBI. A walk followed and the next batter was hit-by-pitch. Milam scored on Kodie Girton's RBI hit. Finally, Scott West hit a single that drove in two batters.
Northview High School graduate, T. J. Decker came on to secure the last two outs of the ninth inning.
"Well I thought that we were fortunate to win," Manager John Hayes. "I thought St. Leon played very, very well. We struggled for awhile, but we took some pitches and got some walks and got some pitches to hit. It seemed like yesterday, everything we hit went away from people, today it was right at them. But there are days like that. When you win, and you're not playing your best, that's a big bonus."
