Six Sycamores earn preseason honors

ST. LOUIS -- A total of six Sycamores were named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Football Conference Preseason Team while Indiana State has been picked to finish fifth in the newly expanded 10-team league, according to a preseason poll of MVFC head coaches, beat writers, radio announcers and sports information directors.

Senior Ben Obaseki and junior Shakir Bell, who have both earned Preseason All-America honors and have been named to the Buck Buchanan and Walter Payton Award Watch Lists, respectively, were each named to the MVFC Preseason Team.

Senior offensive lineman FN Lutz, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained at the Spring Game, was named to the preseason squad as well. On defense, Obaseki is joined by senior linebackers Aaron Archie and Jacolby Washington.

Senior Lucas Hileman, who joined the team two weeks into 2011, was named to the MVFC Preseason Team as the punter.

Reigning national champion North Dakota State received 37-of-38 first place votes and are the preseason selection to win the MVFC in 2012 with 379 points. Northern Iowa was second (300), while Youngstown State (291) placed third.

Illinois State garnered a single first place vote to finish with 287 points in fourth place while the Sycamores were fifth with 228. South Dakota State was picked sixth with 182 points and Southern Illinois was seventh with 167 counters.

South Dakota (97), Western Illinois (90) and Missouri State (69) rounded out the 2012 preseason poll.

Indiana State begins practice today at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The Sycamores kickoff the 2012 campaign at Indiana on Saturday, September 1 at 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
