Optimism is high for the Northview girls' golf program this season as the squad returns its top-four players from a regional qualifying effort last year.

Seniors Sierra Girton and Megan Heaton were each a part of that team along with sophomore Keirsten Mikesell and junior Karlie Atkinson. Senior MaKenzie Brown is expected to join the top-five as the Knights get the season underway with their second match of the year, this morning at Hulman Links.

Second-year coach Bob Treash understandably is happy to have some continuity with his lineup as the team plays in the Terre Haute North Invite today.

"We have our top-four players back from last year so the leadership is a big thing," Treash noted. "The younger girls look up to them and they are pretty vocal. They are very helpful to the other girls and are looking forward to playing with them this year."

Last year's edition was relatively young, but continued to mature throughout the season, winning its last handful of matches, placing second in the Western Indiana Conference and third in the sectional.

Several members of this year's squad got some work in over the summer time despite hectic schedules that included a trip to London to dance in the Olympic ceremonies for Heaton.

"Kiersten played some this summer and MaKenzie Magers played in some tournaments along with MaKenzie Brown," Treash said.

Junior Jenson Swaim returns to the squad as the nine-player team is joined by freshmen Faith Wells and Sydney Lynch.

With additional experience at hand for 2012, Treash likes where his team is headed.

"I'd say the best thing is their attitude," Treash said of his team. "They all have great attitudes and they like to joke and they take instructions really well. We had a good time and I just think their attitudes are really their best traits because they want to play well. There are some teams that the seniors have never beaten since they have been in school. So they are looking to maybe beat one or two of those teams."
