The Wayne Newton Post 346 baseball team takes to the road this weekend to begin play in the Great Lakes Regional after capturing the state championship on Monday afternoon. The American Legion squad will face the Wisconsin runner-up this morning at 10 a.m. in Midland, Mich.
Post 346 was pushed to an extra game as Valparaiso defeated Post 346 on Sunday afternoon.
On Monday, Wayne Newton jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first frame and four more in the third before holding off a late Valparaiso rally for a 14-8 victory. Post 346 pounded out a 17-hit attack in the victory as Kodie Girton, Scott West, Tony Rosselli and Zach Milam each had two hits apiece. Sam Wolf had three hits, which included a three-run home run, his sixth of the season. Girton had a single and a double while driving in a run for Post 346 with Milam driving in two base runners. Wolf posted three RBI in the victory.
On the mound, West limited Valparaiso to three runs over six innings of work before giving way to Bryan Nacke. Five errors by Post 346 made things interesting over the final three frames as Valparaiso scored five runs to close the gap.
Post 346 won its second state title in three years for manager John Hayes, who has seven titles to his credit.
