TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State Sycamores are ranked No. 23 in The Sports Network Preseason Poll as announced today (August 13) by the natonal wire service.
ISU is one of five Missouri Valley Football Conference teams to garner the preseason recognition. North Dakota State, the defending national champions, are ranked No. 2 while Northern Iowa is No. 9. Youngstown State is No. 13, Illinois State is No. 19 and the Sycamores are No. 23.
The Sycamores are coming off back-to-back 6-5 campaigns, marking the first time the program has seen consecutive winning seasons since 1995 & 1996. Another winning season in 2012, would give ISU three in a row for the first time since 1967-69.
The Sports Network has already honored Shakir Bell in the preseason by naming him to the Walter Payton Award Watch List, an honor in which he finished second in the voting last season. Likewise, Ben Obaseki is on the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List, after appearing there as well in 2011.
A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the Top 25 each season. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote. During the regular season, the Top 25 will be released every Monday afternoon, except for the final weekend of the regular season, when it will be released Sunday morning, Nov. 18, prior to the selection of the FCS playoff field. The Sports Network will release a final Top 25 following the FCS championship game, which will be held Jan. 5 in Frisco.
Indiana State begins the 2012 season at Indiana on Saturday, September 1 at 8:00 p.m. (ET) in a game that will be nationally televised on The Big Ten Network.
