The following is a list of upcoming area events as provided to The Brazil Times:

Trash Notice

Officials with the Brazil City Garage recently notified The Brazil Times that it will be one day behind on trash pickup the week of Sept. 3, 2012.

No Bounce House

Due to circumstances out of the control of organizers of the 2012 Bowling Green Old Settlers Picnic, the Bounce Houses and Inflatables will not be at the festival this year.

Literacy Program

Adults who cannot read or would like to improve their reading are invited to visit private tutors through the Clay County Adult Literacy Program.

The program is free and is set up at the Brazil Public Library, 204 N. Walnut St., Brazil.

Scheduled Meetings

The Clay County Local Emergency Planning Committee will conduct its regular 2012 meetings prior to the Clay County Fire Chief's Association at 6 p.m., with the chief's meetings at 7 p.m., during the following dates:

* Aug. 21 -- At the Van Buren Fire House, and

* Nov. 20 -- At the Posey Township Fire House.

Library Adult Program

Edward Jones Financial Advisor Lynsey Lunsford will be at the Brazil Public Library for a presentation Thursday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m.

Lunsford will discuss how people can translate their vision for retirement into tangible goals.

Whether they are 10 or 40 years away from retirement, people will learn investment strategies they may use now to help design the retirement they desire for the future.

The presentation will be free and open to the public.

DAR Meeting

The local Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter will conduct a meeting Thursday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the Clay County Historical Museum.

Chris Leininger of Pure Health Acupuncture will be the guest speaker and will discuss women's health and Chinese medicine.

Coffee Talk

The Rotary Club of Brazil will host Coffee and Club Talk Friday, Aug. 17, from 6-7 p.m., at the Brazil Coffee Grounds Bakery and Coffee Shop, 1115 E. National Ave., Brazil.

The public is encouraged to attend the event. Those attending will receive a free cup of coffee courtesy of the Rotary Club if they stay for a brief fellowship time followed by a 30-minute informal program.

Finger Print Event

The Brazil Moose Lodge No. 780, 225 S. Depot St., Brazil, will conduct a child Finger Print and DNA event Saturday, Aug. 18, beginning at 1 p.m.

Members of the Brazil Police and Fire departments will be at the event to answer questions.

Fish Fry!

The Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department will conduct its annual Jonah Fish Fry Saturday, Aug. 18, from 4-8 p.m., at the Jackson Township Elementary School.

Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Children 5-under will be admitted for free.

Air Show

The Brazil Winged Modelers, in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) will host its annual Air Show Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Brazil-Clay County Airport, to raise money for MDA.

Food and drinks will be available at the event. All are welcome to attend.

The show is scheduled to begin at noon.

Bennett To Speak

The Clay County Republican Club will host its monthly meeting Monday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m., at the Kennedy's Crossing Bingo Center, located across from Northview High School, at 8990 N. Kennedy Crossing Rd., Brazil.

The guest speaker will be Indiana's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Bennett. Those interested in attending the meeting do not need to be a member of the Clay County Republican Club. However, membership is available to those who wish to join.


The Clay Community Schools and Linking Education to Adults, Adolescents and Preschoolers (LEAAP) Center will team up with the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) to present a youth worker café at the YMCA of Clay County, 225 E. Kruzan St., Thursday, Aug. 23.

Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m., followed by a presentation by Joan Knies with the Crisis Connection, Jasper, Ind., on bullying, from noon-1 p.m.

From 1:15-3:15 p.m., Knies will present a Tolerance/Cultural Diversity training seminar at the same location.

Time For A Festival!

The annual Bowling Green Old Settlers Festival will take place Aug. 23-25, in Bowling Green.

The festival will kick off Thursday, Aug. 23, with a ribeye dinner, and close Saturday, Aug. 25, with entertainment provided by the Center Point Family Band and James Family Singers, from 6-7:30 p.m.

Dinner Time!

The Lady Volunteers of Staunton will conduct a community dinner at the Staunton Community Center, Friday, Aug. 24, from 4-7 p.m.

The menu will consist of chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, dinner rolls, coffee, tea and lemonade.

Desserts will be available for $1 each.

Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children 10-under.

All proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Staunton Community Center.

Baby Contest

The annual Bowling Green Old Settlers Festival Baby Contest is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 25.

The contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Check-in time is 9 a.m. Categories include newborn to 6 months, 7-months to 1-year, and 13-months to 2-years.

The contest is limited to Clay County and Bowling Green addresses only.

Little Miss Contest

The annual Bowling Green Old Settlers Festival Little Miss Contest will take place Saturday, Aug. 25.

The contest will begin at 10 a.m., and take place under the Community Building Awning.

The contest is for children ages 4-6. Check-in time is 9:45 a.m.

The annual Toddler Contest will also take place at 9:45 a.m. It is geared for children ages 2-3.

Check-in time is 9:30 a.m.

The contests are limited to Clay County and Bowling Green addresses only.

Ice Cream!

Bee Ridge church will host its annual Ice Cream Social Saturday, Aug. 25, from 4-7 p.m., at the church, 10100 N. Kennedy Crossing Rd., Brazil.

The menu will include homemade ice cream, Ritters ice cream, hot dogs, coney dogs, Bee Ridge barbecue, homemade desserts and more.

There is no cost for the meal, but freewill donations will be accepted.

Children's games and entertainment will also be provided.

Chamber To Meet

The Clay County Chamber of Commerce's next monthly meeting will take place Aug. 28, at noon, at The Renaissance Reception and Conference Center, 101 W. National Ave., Brazil.

Senate candidate, Republican Richard Mourdock, will be the guest speaker.

Golf Scramble

The 2012 Brazil Elks Golf Scramble will take place Sunday, Sept. 2, at the Forest Park Golf Course, Brazil.

A shotgun start has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Registration and lunch will take place at 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $50 per person.

The entry deadline to take part is Aug. 31, 2012.

The annual Clay County Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will take place Friday, Sept. 21, at Forest Park Golf Course.

A shotgun start at 1 p.m., is planned, with lunch scheduled for noon.
