Head-on collison results in fatality

Emergency officials were dispatched east of the County Road 425 overpass Wednesday afternoon for a fatal accident on State Road 42.

The accident took place at approximately 2:37 p.m., and involved two vehicles.

Upon arrival, deputies found a green 2001 Ford Taurus and a silver 2005 Chevrolet Impala. The driver of the Ford Taurus, Nicholas Sutherlin, 20, Brazil, was trapped behind the wheel. A passenger of the Ford Taurus Seth Batchelor, 19, Carbon, was trapped in the front passenger seat.

The driver of the Chevrolet Impala, Charlotte Guthrie, 66, Brazil, was trapped behind the wheel of her motor vehicle.

Due to the traumatic injuries suffered during the accident, Guthrie was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Deputy Coroner Joel Reinoehl.

Sutherlin and Batchelor were both extricated from the vehicle and transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital for medical evaluation.

Guthrie was taken to Regional Hospital where an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning by Dr. Roland Kohr. The Clay County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police are still investigating the cause of the head-on collision.

Assisting the Sheriff's Department were Indiana State Police, TransCare, Posey Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and Search and Rescue.
