The current senior was chosen for the weeklong program, conducted by the Indiana Department of the American Legion Auxiliary. It took place June 17-23, on the campus of Indiana State University, Terre Haute.
While at Girls State, Heaton participated in a program designed to educate young women of Indiana in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Students who attend Girls State live and learn the political system through a mythical city, county and state.
While at Girls State, Heaton was elected the Nationalist State Keynote Speaker, a Senator, Minority Floor Leader and City Election Board Challenger.
She also participated in a variety show with a dance routine at the Honors Day program, which took place Saturday, June 23.
Heaton is the daughter of John and Francine Heaton, Brazil. She was selected to attend Girls State by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 6, Rockville.
