The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) had no new information regarding the Eel River Bridge on Friday.
On Thursday, July 26, a weight limit of 16-tons was put on the State Road 46 bridge. Based on an inspection of the bridge, INDOT determined that vehicles weighing 16-tons are not allowed to travel on the bridge due to the bridge's conditions.
INDOT Media Relations Director for the Crawfordsville District Debbie Calder said the weight restrictions had nothing to do with the repairs to the bridge that took place last year.
"Last year, the bridge was closed due to a crack in one of the gusset plates, now additional repairs need to be made to address the deteriorated gusset plates," she said.
On Tuesday, July 31, structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing the bridge after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented.
According to Calder, INDOT is in the process of developing a repair contract.
"They don't have an exact date for when the project will go to letting," Calder told The Brazil Times.
According to Calder, as soon as the date is finalized, INDOT will be notifying the public.
The through truss bridge was originally built in 1933.
