Based upon the amount of repairs needed, INDOT officials said construction engineers estimated the bridge could safely reopen to traffic in late October.
Bids will be opened for the repair contract Sept. 12, 2012. If awarded, the contract would allow construction to begin by the first of October.
The bridge was closed July 31, after structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing it after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented.
For the safety of motorists, it was determined the bridge would be closed until further notice.
On Thursday, July 26, a weight limit of 16 tons was placed on the bridge. Based on inspection, INDOT determined vehicles weighing 16 tons were not allowed to travel on the bridge.
In November 2011, INDOT officials closed the bridge due to a crack in one of its gusset plates. The bridge was reopened shortly before Christmas 2011.
Currently, the detour follows SR 46 east to State Road 246 west to State Road 59 north and back to SR 46.
