CLAY CITY -- Thursday evening provided the Clay City cross country teams the lone opportunity to run a competitive meet on their home course this season. Hosting the Clay City Invitational along with senior night, the boys team finished in third-place behind South Putnam and Edgewood in the eight-team meet. The girls finished in fourth as the Eagles claimed the girls' meet by 13 points over Putnam County rival Cloverdale. Owen Valley placed third as Eminence, White River Valley, Shakamak and Edgewood fielded incomplete teams.

In the boys' meet, South Putnam's Hunter Barr pulled away over the final mile of the race to win in a time of 18:27 as Shakamak's Luke Sweet took second in 18:35. Berndt Freeman of the Eagles was third, seven seconds ahead of Clay City's Parker Ames' time of 18:50. The Eels' Blake Cochran placed seventh in 19:09 with teammate Paiden Myers finishing ninth in 19:52.

South Putnam scored 48 team points to edge past Edgewood's 54 with Clay City tallying 72 points for third.

In the girls' portion of the meet it was Shakamak's Savannah Turner setting a strong pace over the 3.1 mile course to finish a minute ahead of Cloverdale's Claudia Monnett. Turner finished the race in 21:12 to earn the victory. Teammate Aleksey Green was third in 22:56.

As a team, South Putnam's strong pack running helped it win the event as Madie Egold was seventh and Julianna DeLano placed 10th, but the Eagles also claimed spots 13-17.

Clay City was paced by Kelsey Wright's ninth-place finish in 24:30 with Ashley Reach in 18th with a time of 27:31 and Kiersten Mann finished 21st in 28:33.

While the Eels didn't have any senior boys on the team this season, Tiara Skaggs, Kayla Sinders and Kesley Wright were honored following the meet.

Clay City returns to action Tuesday evening at Craig Park to run in the Northview Invitational.
