Darrel "Jake" W. Courtney, 81, Brazil, passed away at home unexpectedly Sept. 7, 2012.

Jake was born May 7, 1931, in Brazil, the son of Henry and Irene (Montgomery) Courtney.

Jake joined the United States Army in 1949 and served during the Korean War.

He was honorable discharged in 1952.

Jake had worked for the Brazil Wastewater Treatment Plant and more recently at Jackson Township Elementary School as a janitor.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge 264 and the Brazil Moose Lodge.

Jake had attended Wesley Chapel Church.

In his younger years, Jake enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting.

Recently, he enjoyed working around the house and spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James "Peanut" Courtney, sisters Virginia Mae Pieske, Margaret Louise Nichols and Shirley Marie Wilson, and nephews Robert Bolinger, Charles Nichols and James Wilson.

He is survived by sisters Ruby Eberly and Janet Lee Harden and husband Jerry, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be at French Funeral Home Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Randy Dragon officiating.

Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday, from 5-7 p.m.
