Walk Now for Autism set to take place Saturday

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

TERRE HAUTE -- Thousands of walkers will be on hand Saturday at the Walk Now for Autism Speaks event in Terre Haute.

Registration for the walk is scheduled for 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies set for 10:30. The walk will begin at 11 a.m.

The event will take place at the Vigo County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The purpose of the walk is to help raise funds for scientific research, advocacy efforts, family services and to increase awareness about autism, which is now diagnosed in more than 1 in 88 children.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization.

The event will include a mile walk and a community resource fair with educational sources, therapists, schools, recreational organizations and child-friendly activities.

Toys "R" Us is the national sponsor of the program. Additional sponsors include Bridges of Indiana Arc of Vigo County, Harsha Behavioral Center, Bemis Company, Union Hospital Pediatric Therapy, Elanco Animal Health, Sam's Do It Best Hardware, Roselawn Funeral Home, Baesler's Market, Alorica and Caboodles Cupcakes.
