CLINTON -- The North Clay volleyball teams split a pair of contests Wednesday evening as the seventh-grade scored a 25-11, 25-14 victory and the eighth-grade fell for the first time this season, 23-25, 25-14, 13-15.
The seventh-grade team got nine assists from Payton Kumpf and six from Emily Yocom in the victory. Sera Little led the way with three kills and Maggie Mershon topped the squad with 13 serves.
In the eighth-grade contest, North Clay got off to a slow start as South Vermillion jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening set. However, the Knights showed their resilience by battling back to take a 23-21 lead before the Wildcats were able to claim the opener.
Stacy Payton had 13 service points to lead the team followed by Abby Conrad, who had nine. Linzy Lunsford served up 10 points, Kerstie Shaw had five and Allison Herrick added two.
The eighth-grade squad competes Saturday in the eight-team Wabash Valley Tourney at Honey Creek beginning at 9 a.m. The seventh-grade returns to action on Sept. 17 at Sullivan beginning at 5:30 p.m.
