The fifth Rock For Brazil Music Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1 p.m.-1 a.m.

This year, the festival will be dedicated to raising funds for the family of Kenneth "Shorty" Stewart, who lost his life in 2011 in an automobile accident.

For the past four years, Rock For Brazil has raised funds to help several different causes.

"This promises to be the largest Rock For Brazil so far," event coordinator Matt Brookshire said. "We are excited that so many bands continue to come each year."

More than 30 bands are scheduled to play at five different venues in downtown Brazil. Two of the stages will be outside, including one on Franklin Street and another on Sherfey Street.

Other stages will be set up at the Lucky 13 Lounge, Coaches Time Out Bar and the Renaissance Reception and Conference Center.

The first Rock For Brazil Music Festival took place in June 2009, with five bands. It was set up at the old Brazil Junior High School.

At the time, it was decided to make it a yearly event, and each year the event raises funds for a variety of charitable causes.

Rock For Brazil II in 2010 helped raise funds for the family of Kevin Wayne Jackson, friend and fellow musician. Jackson passed away and left a young family.

Rock For Brazil III in 2011 helped raise funds for 14-year-old Zach Ellis, Brazil, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.

Beverly Stewart, wife of Kenny, said she was grateful for the musicians who have helped set up the event, in addition to the others who will be performing for the cause.

"I want to thank all the community involvement and Rock For Brazil bands that have offered their support to help alleviate the financial burdens accumulated in the aftermath of this tragedy," Beverly said. "Kenny would have said, 'Thank you very kindly.'"
