INDOT awards contract for bridge repairs

Monday, September 17, 2012

CLAY COUNTY -- On Monday, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) awarded the contract for expedited repairs for the State Road 46 Bridge over the Eel River west of Bowling Green.

George R. Harvey and Son, Inc., Danville, Ind., submitted the lowest bid, offering to complete the work for $274,033.

Construction is expected to begin by the first of October.

Based upon the amount of repairs needed, INDOT's construction engineers estimated the bridge could possibly be reopened to traffic in late October.

The bridge at SR 46 was closed July 31, after structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing it after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than had been previously documented.

A detour from the bridge follows SR 46 to State Road 246 west to State Road 59 north and back to SR 46.

The contracter chosen has only about 5 years experience, mostly in home style work. His web site is as follows www.georgerharveyson.ambz.com

I don't think the choice was a wise one, but we will see.
