Northview got the Homecoming win it was looking for on Friday night, forcing six turnovers and using the running game to power past South Vermillion 54-6.

The Knights' running game was a key factor in the victory as four different backs found their way into the endzone as Northview ran for 337 yards against the Wildcats.

"I felt like all together we did play a complete game. We were able to get some push up front and when you want to establish your running game you have to control up front," Northview coach George Gettle said. "Early on it was a little difficult, but were able to make some changes. I thought the kids played harder and harder as the game went on."

Turnovers put the Wildcats behind the 8-Ball quickly as Northview recovered a loose ball on the opening kickoff and needed just four plays to score on a one-yard run by Jacob Little.

South Vermillion lost the football via a fumble on its next possession as well, but the Knights weren't able to capitalize.

On its first possession of the second quarter, quarterback Tucker Stewart kept the ball himself for a 43-yard gain on the first play and Little finished the drive with a two-yard run and a 14-0 Knights' lead. After forcing a three-plays and out punt by the Wildcats, Northview took over on the Wildcats' 40-yard line. Stewart found Ben Girton open for a 22-yard reception and two plays later, Jesse Miller scored from 14 yards out.

The lone blemish of the game for the Knights was on the ensuing kickoff as Justin Manlove broke loose to return the kick 90 yards for the Wildcats' touchdown.

Overall, the Knights gave up just 55 yards of offense to the Wildcats, including just six yards rushing on 28 carries overall.

The lead grew to 28-6 at halftime on the Knights' next drive as Miller rambled in from 23 yards with four minutes remaining in the half.

Ben Girton's interception of South Vermillion's Adam Crouch nearly set up a final score before halftime, but a penalty on the Knights derailed the chance at an extra score.

The scoring continued in the third quarter for Northview just two plays into the drive as Miller ripped off a 66-yard run to the six-yard line and Hyde finished the drive with a TD run for a 35-6 lead.

Late in the third quarter, Little recovered a fumbled punt to set up the Knights deep in South Vermillion territory and Stewart needed just one play to score from 25 yards out.

Another turnover, this one an interception of Crouch by Miller, would lead to a one-yard scoring run by Hyde for a 48-6 advantage.

The junior varsity offense got into the act late in the game as quarterback Kade Carter scored on a three-yard run with 4:40 left in the game to complete the scoring.

Despite 115 yards in penalties, Gettle was happy his team secured the conference and Homecoming victory.

"The penalties were definitely the downside to tonight, but a win is a win and we're proud to win on Homecoming," Gettle said. "We'll build on this momentum getting ready for a tough rivalry game next week against West Vigo."

Gettle also noted his team's lack of turnovers and pointed to the rushing game that got 156 yards from Miller and 113 from Stewart.

"That was one thing we told the kids this week is that the turnover issues we've had have really been hurting us," Gettle said. "So we made a concentrated effort in protecting the football. We were able to run the football fairly well. When you are able to run the football and things like that, it makes the games a whole lot easier."

Northview improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the WIC with a trip to West Vigo next weekend.
