Volunteers needed to drive van

Sunday, October 14, 2012

To the Editor:

Mike Holland, local VA officer for Clay County, has been asking for volunteer drivers for the local VA van to take vets to the Indianapolis VA Hospital, W. 10th St., Indianapolis, on regularly scheduled runs.

Volunteers may be male or female, 18-older, with an Indiana Driver's License, and obey Indiana driving laws, and a U.S. citizen.

Volunteers must complete an application and will be called for scheduled runs on perhaps three to five runs a month depending upon the number of volunteer drivers.

Vets may apply for this volunteer work also and all drivers will be furnished their lunch at the VA cafeteria.

We urgently need volunteers at this time and a free physical will be given also.

If you are a vet, you can also drive the van on your scheduled visits as well as taking any others who may need to go on the same day.

Please phone the VA office at 448-9015 Monday through Wednesday, or leave a message, or just stop in at the courthouse, Brazil.

We must be able to take 15 patients and/or caregivers each month to Indianapolis VA or we can lose the van to another county.

Let's go to bat for our vets of all wars remembering how Clay County came together to raise the money to get this benefit, which we receive our gas, insurance, and repairs for the van furnished for all vets for these trips.

The VA actually owns the van and our interest would be lost if we cannot come up with volunteer drivers.
