Hundreds of Clay County fifth-graders marched along United States 40 from the YMCA of Clay County to the Clay County Courthouse Monday morning.

The students -- along with Clay City Jr./Sr. High School and Northview High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) members welcomed Red Ribbon Week with the annual county ceremony.

As they all reached the west side of the courthouse, Clay County Superior Court Judge J. Blaine Akers welcomed all of them.

Clay County Commissioner Paul Sinders then led all in prayer before Clay County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Rob Gambill spoke to the students.

"You've got a great future coming out of this community if you make the right decisions, which I'm sure you will," Gambill said.

Akers then introduced the students from Cornerstone Christian Academy, Meridian, Eastside, Forest Park, Van Buren, Staunton, Jackson Township and Clay City elementaries, while also acknowledging the Clay City and Northview SADD members.

In addition, members of the Clay City volleyball squad, which won its second-straight sectional title Saturday, were also introduced. All four members -- Callie Dayhuff, Macey Jackson, Emily Rogers and Courtney Brown -- are members of Clay City's SADD program.

Clay County Circuit Court Judge Joe Trout also recognized other officials on hand.

Northview SADD Chapter Sponsor Debbie Allen then explained to the students what they would be doing throughout the day. Allen also asked all fifth-graders in attendance to recite a pledge not to use drugs, alcohol or tobacco.

Following the welcome, students released hundreds of red balloons, signifying the beginning of Red Ribbon Week.

The students then split into groups and spent the afternoon touring different locations within the courthouse and Clay County Justice Center.
