Report: Bridge to reopen Sunday

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

BOWLING GREEN -- The Eel River Bridge on State Road 46 will be reopened soon, according to Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Media Relations Director for the Crawfordsville District Debbie Calder.

Calder said the bridge is expected to be reopened on Sunday, Nov. 4, as the project is nearing completion.

On Sept. 17, INDOT awarded the contract for expedited repairs for the SR 46 Bridge over the Eel River west of Bowling Green.

George R. Harvey and Son, Inc., Danville, Ind., submitted the lowest bid, offering to complete the work for $274,033.

Construction began at the beginning of October.

Calder said the bridge is almost finished with repairs; however, there is a plan to have the bridge rehabilitated or replaced in the future.

"It is still being determined," she told The Brazil Times.

"But within the next two or three years, the bridge will have a total rehabilitation or will be replaced."

Until Nov. 4, drivers can use a detour from the bridge, which follows SR 46 to State Road 246 west to State Road 59 north and back to SR 46.

Taking bets on how many months it's open this time before they close it again for 'repairs'.

Thank God,

I felt sorry for those in Bowling Green who had all the trash and traffic while construction was under way. Maybe it won't happen again. Let us be positive. I wonder if it had been left open and a car or truck fell through and someone was killed, then who would we blame.

It could have been left open for car & small truck using only 1 lane. Every thing they did was either on the side (2) places on each side, under the bridge ???. 2 people where working $274,000.00 seems like a good paycheck. Know doubt it will be closed again, maybe this time we can have some snow.

$274,000 this round and $42,927 last round. Just think of the money they just wasted in the last 2yrs if they decide to replace it. Bet its only a few months before they find another problem and have to close it again. Maybe they should start to build a new one now while they can still leave this one open to traffic. But we all know they won't do that. They will end up closing it again then it will take another 4 months to accept bids for the work or a new bridge then another 2 months to begain the work and another 6 before it will be completed, and if winter hits by then it will be delayed. BG/ Poland Road will be a nightmare again. Thanks State of Indiana...

The bridge in Bowling Green is open now. It opened early, but with the storm on the east coast and trash trucks hauling it, probably though Indiana it won't be open long. Enjoy it while we can.
