NMK finishes fourth in finals

Sunday, November 4, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS -- For the second-straight year, the Northview Marching Knights found themselves in fourth-place.

On Saturday, the Marching Knights competed in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Class B State Finals, coming away in fourth, the same spot they earned in 2011.

"I think anything in the top five is about right," NMK Band Director Bob Medworth said. "(The students) seemed to think (we did well). They seemed happy."

For the first time ever, Jasper claimed the Class B title. Jasper won the ISSMA Class A title in 1973. Last year, Jasper finished third overall. The school's best finish in Class B was second, a spot it has claimed four times, with the most recent coming in 2005.

Goshen finished second, followed by Greenwood, Northview, Concord, Northridge, Floyd Central, Munster, Plainfield and North Side.

Jasper's show was named, "Trinity."

Medworth said he believed the Marching Knights left it all out on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday.

"I thought we were pretty good," he said. "The stuff I could hear was in tune."

However, after several months of preparation for Saturday, Medworth admitted there is an empty feeling in his stomach after the state finals each year.

"I, personally, think a lot of people feel a little bit of depression," Medworth said. "We've worked so hard for so long.

"Everyone was really happy with our theme, 'Don't Give Up,'" he continued. "I think we're approaching it the right way. But all of it goes away."

Now, Medworth said the Marching Knights have to change direction and begin preparation for the pep band season and Christmas Spectacular.
