Several elementary schools in Clay County celebrated Veterans Day this year with special programs at their schools.

Jackson Township Elementary hosted more than 50 area Veterans at a program Friday Nov. 9, at 12:30.

The school presented a lunch for all Veterans and, additionally, gave them a small gift for attending.

Students then presented special poems, essays and words about the Veterans and their service in a program in the school gymnasium. Students who'd won Veterans Day coloring contests were given special recognition, and others who won a school essay contest about Veterans Day got to read those aloud.

Veterans' names were then read aloud, along with the names of the students who were hosting them that day.

Meridian Elementary also hosted a Veterans Day program Friday, Nov. 9, hosted by the Meridian student council.

The VFW read from a poem entitled "Old Glory" and gave a presentation on the colors in the American flag as well as the 13 folds of the American flag.

Meridian parent Josh Hayden, Petty Officer 2nd Class, a culinary specialist in the United States Navy, spoke in his daughter Ellie's third-grade classroom. He was able to share his experience in the Navy with Heidi Madsen's class.
