The Brazil Police Department added a new officer Tuesday.

Patrolman Brian Helmer, 29, originally from Putnam County, was sworn in as the department's newest officer. Brazil Mayor Brian Wyndham conducted the ceremony.

Helmer has been working with the department for a few months and will have to attend the Indiana State Police Academy in the upcoming months.

Helmer and his wife Lacey have two children and have made their home in Clay County.

According to Brazil Police Chief Clint McQueen, the department now has 13 full-time officers -- in addition to its reserve force -- and is now fully staffed.

Helmer's father, Tom Helmer, is the Chief Deputy for the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. His brother, Chris Helmer, is a member of the Speedway Police Department.
